ON THE TRACK WITH CRIMSON RACING
This week we got to speak with a very well known stable, Crimson Racing! They had a ton of Zed knowledge and racing experience to share!
Here is the interview!
Q – What Is Your Stable Name?
My main stable is Crimson Racing, but I also house some horses within Crimson Breeding. In addition, I have 50% ownership of Hidden Valley Ranch.
The stable name came from The Crimson Chin, our best racer and the best sprinter currently in the game.
While we didn’t name her, it was only right for us to pay homage to her by naming our operation after her!
Right now we currently own 48 horses in total.
To date (10/9/21), we have won 490 races. In addition, we have placed second 424 times and third 394 times for a total of 1,308 races shown. We have a 13.61% win rate!
Q – When Did You Start In Zed?
We came over from NBA Top Shot in late April 2021.
Originally, we heard about Zed from a friend and thought it sounded like a great game to try and pick up. Quickly, we fell in love with it.
Our first purchase was Final Straw, a genesis Z3 colt. We kept him unraced and unbred until more recently.
In April after buying Melanie, our first great racer (super rare super coat Z4 Nak Legendary), we stumbled upon The Crimson Chin and the rest is history!
My proudest moment was buying The Crimson Chin within 20 minutes of racing against her back in April!
This horse has exceeded all of my expectations even after we saw how great she was.
When odds were a thing, this horse was untouched in her best distances making her arguably the best horse in the game.
I are not sure where the stable would be today without this horse.
Q – What Is Your Primary Focus In ZED? Breeding, Racing, or Selling?
My primary focus is racing. Although, I’ve recently become more interested in breeding.
However, any successful breeding I do would be for the purposes of finding new high-end racers.
The focus really remains the same if you think about it. I want to learn to breed great racers to add to my stable so that we can race more!
Q – How Many Hours A Week Do You Dedicate To ZED?
Zed has taken up a surprising amount of my life in the past few months.
Outside of my day job and spending time with my family, it’s definitely been the next biggest use of my free time.
I probably couldn’t put a number on the amount of hours that I spend per week, but just know that it is a substantial amount of my time.
Q – What Is Your Favorite Horse You Own And Why Do You Love It?
I’m going to cheat here and list two favorite horses: The Crimson Chin and Terms of Engagement.
The Crimson Chin is the eponym for our stable and has been our crown jewel since April.
She is the best sprinter in the game, having been the favorite (by odds, until they went away) in all 1000M races she has entered.
As of this writing, she has 2 ETH in racing profits, despite a poor record in a small sample size of high value races.
Terms of Engagement, a Z1, was the first truly expensive horse I purchased, and she continues to exceed all expectations.
To date, she has never come in last place in a race in almost 600 races. A Zed record I can’t ever see being broken.
She is the definition of a “tournament horse”, finishing in the top 3 a whopping 49% of the time!
As a Z1, she is also a coveted and proven breeder, and I imagine she’ll be a huge part of our breeding successes over the coming years.
Q – What Advice Would You Give To Someone Starting A ZED Stable Now?
My advice for a new stable owner would be to try to find a genesis horse or two if your budget allows.
Genesis horses will be the key to the game in the long run as the populations of horses explodes and the number of genesis horses doesn’t change.
Otherwise, do your homework and look for a fun low class racer to get your feet wet!
Q – Who Is Someone You Respect In The Zed Community And Why?
There are too many to name here, but a few people I am constantly learning from are: Good Boy Racing, Doofy, Arbitrage, and Donkey Teeth, among others.
Obviously DanShan has more recently become a huge help for me with breeding too.
We would like to personally shout out to the knowyourhorses.com crew, Ryan and Tyler, for all they’ve done for the community with their powerful tools.
Q – What Are Your Thoughts About The Blood Tool And Why Did You Buy it?
I bought the blood tool recently to improve my breeding game.
I had heard good things about it from a few stables I respect, and figured it would hopefully be money well spent.
So far, I’ve definitely learned to appreciate its power and the ability to look at breeding in a more quantitative way.
To summarize, it’s helping me shape a long-term plan around breeding.
It has already become my favorite tool that I use for Zed.
Q – Where Will ZED Be 24 Months From Today?
In 24 months from today, I see Zed having much more mainstream adoption, primetime races, huge sponsorships, and new race modes!
Although, for Zed to really be successful several things have to go right from a product development standpoint. Ultimately, there are no limits to how big this platform can get.
Ideally, it would follow a similar trajectory to what we’ve seen with poker in the early 2000’s or DFS in the past decade.
Q – If You Could Change One Thing About Zed What Would It Be And Why?
There are many things I think could be changed about Zed, but I also believe those things will get addressed over time.
I’m one to usually give Zed the benefit of the doubt on oversights or mishaps, given how early we are in this game and how people sometimes forget it’s still in beta.
Many have publicized their wish lists for Zed , so I’ll leave people to look through those rather than rehash them here.
Q – What Is One Secret You Hate To Give Away But Will Tell Us About Your ZED Strategy?
I’m not sure there are many secrets nowadays, but one thing I’d stress especially to new users is not to rely too heavily on flames alone.
Flames can be misleading depending on the type of racer you have, so make sure you use them as just one tool in your tool kit.
Q – Any Last Comments?
I think that just about covers everything we have to say! We appreciate this opportunity to discuss one of our passions – Zed Run!
